Campbeltown is the main town on the Kintyre Peninsula. It is located at the far south and has an airport nearby that connects to Glasgow with regular flights.

Campbeltown itself is most famous for its whisky distilleries - being home to thirty four at one time. It was once a thriving seaport and shipbuilding town but this waned after the Victorian era. Campbeltown Kintyre Argyll Tourist Information

Campbeltown is the main town for the Kintyre Peninsula. It is located near the south around a deep bay sheltered by Davaar Island. It's heyday was as an important shipbuilding town exporting coal and being the base of a huge fishing fleet during the Victorian era. Much of Campbeltown's fame has also come from its whisky distilleries and one is still going strong today.

The town is well stocked with a variety of shops, pubs, restaurants and take aways. There is a Tourist Information Office at MacKinnon House, The Pier, Kintyre, Campbeltown, Strathclyde, Scotland, PA28 6EF. Tel: 08707 200 609. Fax: 01586 553291.

Being the main town and just three miles from its airport there is plenty of accommodation in and around the town and out in Machiranish which is handy for the golf course and beach.

The town is also home to the oldest purpose-built cinema in Scotland still showing films. The Picture House built in 1913 is also the only cinema in Scotland still with themed decoration, and one of the few cinema buildings where you can watch films either the stalls or balcony. It shows regular films but is a delight to use. Check the links right for more information and pictures.

Campbeltown's Malt Whisky Distilleries

At one time there were thirty four whisky distilleries in Campbeltown that threw out so much peaty smoke that it formed a thick fog over the town. Today Glen Scotia, Springbank and the former Glengyle distilleries are still going. Due to its unique position the whiskies of Campbeltown are regarded as having an oily briny quality.

Springbank Distillery has been producing single malt whisky since the 19th century. It's the oldest independent family owned distillery in Scotland, founded in 1828 on the site of an illicit still. They are one of the few distilleries that still carry out the malting process along with the rest of the distilling. They produce three different malt whiskies: Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn. Distillery tours can be arranged by appointment only. Springbank Distillers Ltd, 85 Longrow, Campbeltown, Argyll PA28 6EX. Tel: 01586 552085. Email tours@jandamitchell.com.

The Glengyle Distillery has been reopened as the Kilkerren Distillery in Campbeltown. It reopened in 2004 and is continuing the tradition by producing new malts. Tours are not available at this time. Killkerran Info, 85 Longrow, Campbeltown, Argyll PA28 6EX. Tel: 01586 552009. Email: info@kilkerran.com

Glen Scotia has something of an up and down history. It was established in 1832 and has had periods of success and lows when it has been sold on or the owners have gone bankcrupt. It is said that the ghost of one of the owners, Duncan MacCallum, haunts the distillery after he committed suicide in 1930 after having had to close in 1928. He drowned himself in Campbeltown Loch. It is currently ticking over at present. Glen Scotia Distillery, 12 High Street, Campbeltown, Argyll PA28 6DS. Tel: 01586 552 288.
