Around Perth, Scone Palace, Gleneagles Golf, Auchterarder, Kinross, Perthshire

Pushing into the surrounding areas of Perth there's both Scottish History and Championship golf afoot. Scone Palace just to the north of Perth is the site of the Crowning of Scottish Kings, including that of Robert the Bruce in March 1306. For the best of Perthshire golf head to luxury golf resort locations Gleneagles and Auchterarder. Three first class Championship golf courses are at Gleneagles, alongside luxury golf hotels and a golf academy.

Pretty Kinross-shire contain the stunning Loch Leven, the largest of the Lowland Lochs. Here on Castle Island within the Loch Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned for a time. Loch Leven is also home to a huge wildfowl colony and became a National Nature Reserve in the mid 1960s.

Scone Palace - The Crowning Place of Scottish Kings

Just to the north of Perth, Scone Palace is usually crowded with visitors. Crowning place of kings, the 'Kings of Scotland' exhibition within Scone Palce explores the history of Scone as a site for the Crowning Place of Scottish Kings. Queen Victoria's boudoir with bed that she slept in also draws interest!

The extensive collection of 17th and 18th century ivories in the State Dining Room at Scone is considered by many as a highlight. There's a lot of it, and the effect is somehow rather haunting.

More of a highlight perhaps is the painting by David Wilkie - 'The Village Politicians' which is hung in the Inner Hall. Scone has been in the hands of the Murray family for 400 years and they currently hold the Earl of Mansfield title. The lands here were gifted by James VI of Scotland to Sir David Murray. The palace you see today dates from the 13th century in parts, but is mostly 19th century Georgian Gothic architecture. The site though once contained the Abbot's Palace. Wander down the Murray family photo gallery and muse over wealth distribution and title whilst breathing in the scent of the Earl of Mansfield's orchids. The kings of Scotland were actually crowned on the Moot Hill site, seated upon the Stone of Scone. Robert the Bruce declared himself King of Scots on Moot Hill on 25th March 1306. Today a small Presbyterian chapel stands on Moot Hill and dates from 1804. Look for the replica of the Stone of Scone adjacent.

Gleneagles Golf & Auchterarder Golf Courses

The Gleneagles golf courses are a test indeed, and legendary within the Scotland Golf network. Alongside Troon on the Ayrshire coast and St Andrews on the Fife coast, Gleneagles in Perthshire is one of Scotland's best luxury golf resorts. Jack Nicklaus' PGA Centenary golf course is here, alongside two more championship golf courses - The Queen's Golf Course and The King's Golf Course. James Braid, who won the Open Championship 5 times no less was also involved in the design of golf courses here at Gleneagles, and when world class golf players are involved in the planning of a luxury golf resort you know you're getting the best and a golf challenge up to their standards!

The famous Gleneagles golf hotel offers a choice of luxury golf packages. Gleneagles is a superb golf venue for family golf holidays, with the 'Wee Course' (9 holes) offering excellent golf terrain for beginners. Several putting greens and practice areas are also available, plus you can book golf lessons via the Golf Academy here.

For details on booking Glenealgles Golf Breaks and lessons at the Golf Academy, see the Gleneagles Golf weblink right.

Nearby Auchterarder offers further golf opportunities. The Auchterarder golf club has a stunning parkland course with views towards Glendevon. The course is situated adjacent to the PGA Centenary Course at Gleneagles.

Kinross, Kinross-shire & Loch Leven

Kinross-shire may be a small Scottish country, but it packs plenty into its 15 mile across space, including some excellent hill walking terrain and a host of outdoor activities including trout fishing, jet ski, water skiing and motor boating at Loch Leven.

Loch Leven in the heart of the county is the largest loch in Lowland Britain, and a National Nature Reserve since 1964. The largest concentration of breeding freshwater ducks in Britain are here at Loch Leven, as is a huge waterfowl population. You can hop on a ferry, which departs regularly during the summer months, from the pier adjacent to the Angling Centre across to Castle Island. Castle Island and its tower - Loch Leven Castle served as prison for Mary Queen of Scots from 1567 to 1568. Mary escaped with the aide of William Douglas. St Serfs, another of Loch Leven's islands, is the site of a 9th century priory.

Around 15,000 geese flock here to Loch Leven in Autumn. Pretty Kirkgate Park sits on the shores of the Loch, as does Kinross with its weekly Sunday market. Kinross Tourist Information, Kinross Service Area, off Junction 6, M90, Kinross, Perthshire, KY13 7NQ, Scotland. Tel. 01577 863680.
