The History of Golf, British Golf Museum St Andrews Scotland Golf
"If you draw your Club in order to Strike, and proceed so far in the stroke as to bring down your club - if then your Club shall break in any way it is to be accounted a stroke". (The Rules of Golf, Society of St Andrews Golfers, 1754). Even if golf isn't your game, (although for golf lovers, St Andrews is a pilgrimage) you'll find the British Golf Museum on the St Andrews seafront a fascinating experience. The museum is well placed in St Andrews, a golf location at the heart of British Golf.
Look just round the corner from the museum and you'll see the historic Royal and Ancient Golf Clubhouse with views of the first Tee and famous 18th hole of the St Andrews Old Course.
The golf archives and artefacts including golf balls, golf clubs and more held previously at The Royal and Ancient Golf Club demanded a larger museum venue, and the British Golf Museum here opened to great acclaim on 25th June 1990. Each year the golf archive grows, and the museum does well in tracing golf history from the 17th century to the present. Early wooden golf clubs and Irons to a signed T Shirt worn by Tiger Woods are here on display. Tiger Woods himself has stated that to win at St Andrews is the ultimate. The museum takes you through the different materials used for both golf clubs and golf balls, and the golf industry that developed around the game. Golf balls have seen some changes both in size and materials. Find out how golf balls evolved from the feather ball to rubber core ball, and the craft involved in their production. Did you know golf courses didn't always have 18 holes and that the earliest known Rules of Golf were drawn up in 1744 by a company of Edinburgh Golfers. The term golf though is first referenced in an Act of Parliament dating from 1457.
