Edinburgh Ghost Walks

For haunted places, ghost walks and ghost stories Edinburgh is a city that's hard to beat. There's a choice of companies offering ghost tours around Edinburgh, particularly in the Old Town area which has a selection of gruesome stories like the plague and body snatching. Living TV's 'Most Haunted' has visited the Edinburgh Vaults! Edinburgh's underground vaults, until fairly recently forgotten, were opened up in the mid 1990s around South Bridge. In the early 19th century the Edinburgh vaults were the main site of Edinburgh's slums, crammed with poverty stricken Highlanders and Irish migrants fleeing the potato famine.

It's easy to be a little cynical, but a close look at some of the ghost tours on offer in Edinburgh, most of which start somewhere on the Royal Mile and last just over an hour, reveal some pretty impressive artistic performances suitable for children too. There's an educational slant to many, revealing Edinburgh's darker history, how parts of the Old Town were blocked off during the plague and people left to die and of course true life figures often appear such as William Burke and William Hare who murdered those who wouldn't be missed and passed their bodies to Edinburgh's surgical notables for a fee.

Checkout their City of the Dead ghost walk - not just a ghost tour, a phenomenon! This ghost tour features the renowned Mackenzie Poltergeist. Like most of the ghost tours in Edinburgh, this one blends some clever humour with a dash of history and plenty of supernatural spook, all to good effect. For specialised ghost tours of the Edinburgh Vaults, Mercat Tours is rather good. See their website right and book their tours online. Ghost tour choice from Mercat includes 'Secrets of the Royal Mile', 'Writers By the Mile' and one of the highlight tours - 'The Vaults Tour'. In this splendid Edinburgh Vaults tour you descent down to the 18th century South Bridge Vaults where the tour delves into the conditions of wretched residents in the slums down here and gruesome body snatchers.
