Historic Boat Trips down the water on the Clyde
Clockwork Orange, Glasgow City Breaks made easy via Glasgow's Subway
Glasgow Station, Glasgow Airport, Glasgow Bus Timetable, Glasgow Underground
Glasgow and Greater Glasgow's excellent public transport network, including Glasgow Underground, Glasgow rail networks, Glasgow bus services and open top bus tours mean you've no need for a car at all on a Glasgow city break.
Excellent bus, underground and rail services combine with two international airports serving Glasgow - Glasgow International Airport just 8 miles west of the city centre, and Glasgow Prestwick Airport situated 30 miles to the south on the Ayrshire coast near Ayr. Direct rail and bus services run from Glasgow International Airport into the city regularly, and frequent direct rail runs from Glasgow Prestwick into the city. A bit of pre-planning on the transport side before your Glasgow city break will help you get the best out of the city in the least time. A boat trip along the River Clyde and an open top bus tour around the city will both help you get your bearings early on.

Glasgow International Airport & Glasgow Shuttlebus
Glasgow International Airport, situated just 8 miles to the Southwest of Glasgow City Centre, is the busiest of Scotland's three big international airports. By 2004 it was handling over one million passengers (the first of Scotland's Airports to do so). As well as cheap flights from Glasgow to well known holiday destinations such as Majorca, the Algarve and Alicante/Malaga/Spanish Costas, flights head direct from Glasgow to top city breaks such as Barcelona and Amsterdam, all London Airports, Belfast and Dublin. Long Haul flights depart from Glasgow International Airport too, to destinations such as Canada and North American locations such as Las Vagas and Boston.
Often confused with Glasgow Prestwick Airport situated 30 miles south of Glasgow near Ayr, Glasgow International Airport is well served by public transport into Glasgow City Centre (see shuttle bus weblinks right for details). Well equipped with a choice of shops, a tourist information centre, a choice of car hire firms and more, Glasgow International Airport is ideally placed alongside the M8 with Mainline Railway station Paisley Gilmour Street nearby.

Glasgow Underground 'Clockwork Orange'
Glasgow's one square line subway/underground is a bonus for Glasgow city break visitors. It's a quick and cheap way of getting around Glasgow's main sights, although for attractions like the Burrell Collection you'll need to hop on either bus or mainline rail.
Glasgow has its public transport network sussed - all forms of transport including subway, rail and bus (and increasingly marked cycle and walking trails) all interlink and work well together.
Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT run Glasgow's subway/underground, which has fondly become known as the 'Clockwork Orange' - orange features heavily!) Look to the SPT Glasgow Subway weblink right for a map of the underground line. It's literally square shaped and takes in key stops such as Kelvindale and the Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery/West End, St Enoch for Glasgow Green and the People's Palace plus St Enoch shopping, Buchannan Street for nearby Buchannan bus station, High Street and major sights such as the Glasgow School of Art. The line pushes down into Glasgow's southside too with stops at Ibrox, Govan and West Street.
Checkout the SPT Glasgow Subway, Rail & Bus network weblink right for timetables, maps and fare prices. Special discount deal tickets are available. A recent fab service is the Subway Nightrider - a bus service running through the night after the subway closes. Major stops on Glasgow's Southside and West End are taken in by the 701 Outer Circle (clockwise) night bus service and the 711 Inner Circl service (anti-clockwise). Check the SPT weblink right for details.
Glasgow Bus & Glasgow Rail - Glasgow Stations
Glasgow's bus service network is superb, with First Group (weblink right) buses covering every corner of Glasgow city centre and Greater Glasgow. First Buses also offer a nifty Summer Days out timetable (download the map and details via their website), making it quick and easy to reach all of Glasgow's many attractions via bus. You're most likely to be using the bus service (rather than the underground) when you push out to Glasgow attractions outside of the city centre. These include art galleries like to the Burrell Collection and Pollok Park to the South, Clydebank to the west along the river and the Scottish Football Museum to the South near King's Park.
Glasgow city centre has a selection of railway station stops - the two big ones are Queen Street (for best rail connections direct to Edinburgh, and north onto Oban, Fort William and Dumbarton) and Central Station (best links south and west to ports at Androssan, both of Glasgow's Airports and south to Kilmarnock, Dumfries and the port of Stranraer). Other railway stops in Glasgow City Centre include Charing Cross, High Street and Argyle Street. Scot Rail networks in and out of Glasgow are superb (see Scot Rail weblink right to download rail network map and timetables). Most trains coming up on the National Rail network from England arrive at Central Station. (see National Rail weblink right for timetables).
Connection by rail from Central Station to Queen Street isn't very direct, so hop on the regular shuttle bus service between the stations (number 398) if you're pushing onto Edinburgh by rail.
If you're planning a round trip by rail into Glasgow and beyond up into the Highlands, you'll get a good perspective for planning by taking a look at the National Rail network map, downloadable via their website. Direct routes up from England into Glasgow are from Preston and Carlisle.
Glasgow Open Top Bus Tours/Glasgow Scotland Sightseeing Tours
Open top bus tours are a great way to get your bearings in any large city, and Glasgow has a few great open top bus tours available. City Sightseeing Glasgow tours (weblink right) are the distinctive red open top buses which run regular Glasgow sightseeing tours around the city throughout the year. Tickets are valid for two days and other discounts into Glasgow attractions come with the ticket.(buy tickets at discount price online via their website right).
Their open top bus tour takes in the city centre, the West End, down to the River Clyde and Tall Ship at Glasgow Harbour and east to Glasgow Green and up around Glasgow Cathedral. See their tour map on the website. It's a comprehensive tour of Glasgow's main tourist sights, but doesn't move south of the river. Buses run about every 15 minutes so they're frequent!

Glasgow Clyde Boat Trips
A trip to Glasgow isn't complete without a boat trip down the historic River Clyde (which alongside old historic shipyards has some pretty dynamic modern architecture lining its banks these days!).
Clyde Waterbus Services (weblink right) offer boat trips on the River Clyde on the Pride O' Clyde waterbus. The boat departs from Glasgow City Centre waterfront and journies all the way up to Braehead shopping centre taking in the Clyde Auditorium, the Finnieston Crane and the Glasgow Science Centre along the way.
Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, you can sit back on the boat with a nice drink and absorb a piece of Glasgow's shipbuilding history. The boat trip lasts around 30 minutes. The departure point at Glasgow is just below Central Station Railbridge on the Broomilaw - just at the bottom of Jamaica Street opposite Jurys Inn Hotel. The departure point at Braehead is the waiting room on the left side of the Maritime Museum with Green Car park adjacent (you go through a swing gate to get to the waiting room). Check the Clyde Waterbus website right for departure times which are around every one and a half hours daily.
See also the weblink right for Waverley Excursions, and boat trips on the Clyde River via the character Waverley Paddle Steamer. Cruising 'doon the watter' on the Waverley Paddle Steamer is one of the best ways to take in the Clyde (they offer boat trips further afield too around the Ayrshire coast and more). The Waverley Steam Paddler's main port is the Glasgow Science Centre, and it chugs on up towards Dunoon and Rothesay. Pre-book online via their website right, or contact the Waverley booking line on 0845 130 4647.
