Glasgow Cinemas & IMAX

Glasgow Shopping & Glasgow Shopping Centres

Glasgow is acclaimed as one of the UK's best shopping centres outside London. The tag is justified, as the variety of shopping centres, designer shops and city centre shops selling everything from fashion clothing to gifts, art and home furnishings is huge. Glasgow city centre is particularly good, with a choice of shopping centres and shops, all clustered close together for easy browsing and buying. Glasgow city centres main shopping hub is around Sauchiehall Street, Buchanan Street and Argyle Street - easy to get to as Glasgow's public transport network converges here also. For more specialised craft shops, quirky boutiques and antiques/vintage record stores head for studentville over in Glasgow's West End.

Central Glasgow shopping centre, this one boats over 80 well known highstreet brands including Boots, H&M, Sainsbury's and a John Lewis department Store. Check the website for opening times, late opening is Thursday night til 8pm. Car Park and foodhall are on-site.

Princes Square Shopping Centre, Buchanan Street, Glasgow City Centre. Another central shopping centre in Glasgow, this one stays open until late (midnight) and is a bit more chic than Buchanan Galleries. The 45 shops spread over its five floors include Crabtree & Evelyn, Whistles, Brownns, Calvin Klein Underwear and French Connection. The focus is stylish fashion, jewellery, beauty including a Jo Malone shop and Vidal Sassoon hairdressers, and stylish gifts aka the Pen Shop. Bars, restaurants and cafes are also here. The stylish shops, bars and cafes here sit well in this listed building (dating from 1841), rather interestingly restored with the glass ceiling a particular feature.

St Enoch Centre, 55 St Enoch Square, Glasgow, G1 4BW. Tel. 0141 204 3900. Sitting on the site of the old Enoch Hotel, this central Glasgow shopping centre has it all including numerous high street brand shops such as Debenhams and BHS to Top Shop, JD Sports, plus a choice of Food and drink outlets from Macdonalds to KFC. There's a tasty choice of fashion and footwear stores in this Glasgow shopping centre. See also weblink right for Braehead Shopping and Leisure Centre slightly out of town, west along the Clyde. There's more out of town shopping at East Kilbride Shopping Centre (the largest in Scotland), Glasgow Fort at Easterhouse and the brand new Silverburn Shopping Centre in Pollock.

The Barras, Historic Glasgow Market, Glasgow's East End

Not far from Queens Street Station in the heart of Glasgow's East End near Glasgow Green sits the historic Barras Market (see Barras Market website right for a full history and trader details).

The Barras Market is still going strong, and well worth a browse. It's a Glasgow weekend market with bargains galore, and runs on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 5pm.

Avril Paton's painting, 'The Barras' (1984), usually on display in Glasgow's People's Palace, is a modern take on the market. The painting is crammed with peoplebustling around for bargains, all of whom seem to have an individuality and expression, which is unusual and no doubt deliberate. Hard hitting, the painting will keep your attention for quite awhile!
