Glasgow Restaurants, Cafes & Bistros

Famous as the curry capital of the UK, Glasgow now has numerous contemporary options for eating out, from modern Scottish cuisine to a diverse ethnic range, vegetarian, Italian and a choice of cafes, bistros and cafe bars. There's an excellent choice of seafood restaurants around Glasgow, plus many restaurants blend delectable food with entertainment - see the Curry Karaoke near Glasgow Harbour and the Scottish Exhibition Centre for a good example (weblink right!). For a more chilled blending of food and music look to the West End around Hillhead underground station and Byres Road. Here you'll find bistros aplenty, often blended with live jazz music or piano/bar style (visit Baby Grand on Byres Road).

Many Glasgow restaurants and eateries are concentrated in Glasgow's city centre hub, particularly in the Merchant City area and in the West End Glasgow University district (just hop off at Hillhead underground station and a cluster of restaurants/bars are adjacent). On Candleriggs in Merchant City and around you've a particular Glasgow hotspot for restaurants and chic bars. In the West End, boosted by its university population, there's a choice of nice cafes (see the University Cafe, 87 Byres Road and the Bay Tree Cafe, 403 Great Wester Road which has a great choice of vegetarian food). The Byres Road around Hillhead underground station is certainly a hub for restaurants, bars and cafes on the West End. See also the Ashton Lane choice of Glasgow West End restaurants and bars.

Chinese restaurant choice in Glasgow alongside Glasgow curry houses do particularly well. There's an excellent choice of Chinese and Far East restaurants in Glasgow City Centre and Merchant City (checkout a selection in the weblinks right, and see Glasgow restaurant listings weblink right for more). An excellent source for not just Glasgow restaurant listings, but also clubs, bars, cinema and theatre is the Social Animal weblink right. They've listings for other Scottish centres such as Edinburgh and Dundee, but Glasgow is the best represented here. Many of Glasgow's restaurants are listed on it.

You'll find a superb choice of Indian Restaurants between Kelvingrove and Charing Cross. Mother India on Westminster Terrace is one of the most popular, renowned for its wide choice of Indian vegetarian options. Panjea on Kent Road/Charing Cross Glasgow is another popular one, with more karaoke nights here too.

Glasgow Pubs

Whatever your preference of pub, be it traditional real ale and fine Scotch whisky focus, chic glitz bars come clubs, pubs with live music or quirky dcor pubs, Glasgow has them all. As with Glasgow restaurants, there's a few clusters of pubs particularly in Glasgow city centre and around Merchant City, plenty of traditional styled and quirky pubs and bars around Glasgow's student West End.

For a pretty comprehensive listing of Glasgow pubs see the Glasgow pubs weblink right for details. The modern bar end is certainly centred around Merchants City and Glasgow city centre, with plenty too in the West End. Push down towards the Clyde and the Stockwell Street/Saltmarket area for pubs with a more traditional feel serving up real ale and live blues and jazz (Clutha Vaults & Scotia Bar.

The Arches in the city centre (weblink right) is a contemporary arts centre with basement bar or checkout Variety bar on Sauchiehall Street, popular with local students and renowned for its art nouveau dcor.
