You won't find a better central Scottish Borders base than Galashiels, with Melrose Abbey, Sir Walter Scott's Abbotsford Home and the surrounding Border towns of Selkirk, Hawick, Lauder and Kelso all easily accessible.
Galashiels, Textile History, Gala House Museum & the Southern Upland Way
Galashiels town centre offers a choice of good restaurants (particularly chinese), with good shopping facilities and easy access to the Southern Uplands Way which passes right through Galashiels. Likewise cyclists can join the Tweed Cycle Way (weblink right) from Galashiels.
Galashiels makes a good budget Scottish Borders base too, with a number of friendly B&Bs in and around the town. Other attractions in the town include the Pavilion Cinema, local golf courses, a swimming pool, a superb enormous indoor kids adventure playground suitable for ages 1 to 12 years and the Castle Warehouse retail outlet. Galashiels makes for a good family base in the Scottish Borders, with local Scotia Kids Indoor Playground and Cinema offering good family entertainment options. (a treat after dragging them round Abbotsford?)

Scotia Kids Ltd, Netherdale Industrial Estate, Netherdale, Galashiels TD1 3EY. Tel. 01896 758200. A superb giant kids indoor playground with tube slies, ball pools and web climbs galore.

Lindean Mill Glass, Galashiels, TD1 3PE. Tel. 01750 20173. Workshop and gallery open to the public from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm (weekends by appointment). Lindean is signposted on the A7 and sits 2 miles north of Selkirk.
