Boat of Garten Train Birdwatching Scotland Loch Garten Osprey RSPB Reserve

The Boat of Garten is a small village northeast of Aviemore. It is ideally situated for bike rides and walks in the Abernethy Forest and exploring Loch Garten RSPB Reserve.

The town is also a good base for hillwalking, fishing and golf with its own 18 hole golf course.

Boat of Garten Tourist Information - The Osprey Village

The Boat of Garten is a village eight miles northeast of Aviemore. It grew up alongside the railway that still runs today but only thanks to the efforts of train enthusiasts who keep it going as a tourist concern. The village is also fuelled by the visitors attracted to nearby Loch Garten and the RSPB's Reserve in Abernethy Forest. In fact the village calls itself The Osprey Village.

The village has a good range of accommodation including hotels and B&Bs as well as a post office and a range of shops for everyday provisions.

The Strathspey Steam Railway runs between The Boat of Garten and Aviemore. During the summer you can dine on the train with food provided by the Cairngorm Hotel. Throughout the year a variety of events are organised such as the Santa Services during the Christmas Season - always popular with the youngsters.

Boat of Garten Golf & River Spey Fishing

The Boat of Garten has an 18-hole golf course founded in 1898. It is a heathland course with views of the mountains. The club welcomes visitors and even have two tennis courts for those who don't fancy golf. Check their website for photos and a webcam of the course.

The River Spey runs along the edge of The Boat of Garten and is popular for salmon, sea trout and brown trout fishing. Salmon Fishing on the Spey is permitted between 11 February and 30 September. Trout fishing season is between 15 March and 30 September.

Abernethy Angling Improvement Association manage 15 pools over 6 miles of river near Boat of Garten. This stretch of river is available to visitors staying in Boat of Garten, Nethybridge, Dulnain Bridge and Carr-Bridge for fly-spinning or worm fishing. Visitor tickets are available from The Boat of Garten Post Office during opening hours. In addition the privately owned Kinchurdy Salmon fishings on the Strathspey Estate just upstream from the village are available to visitors with a day ticket. Loch Garten RSPB Reserve Osprey Bird Watching Scotland

Within the ancient Caledonian pines of Abernethy Forest, west of The Boat of Garten, is the Loch Garten RSPB Reserve. Loch Garten is considered the ancestral home of the Osprey and they have been recorded as breeding here for 50 years.

The Osprey Centre has CCTV cameras linked to osprey nests so you can watch them and their young close-up without disturbing them. The centre also opens at dawn during the spring so you can watch the capercaille lekking via remote cameras.

The best time to visit is April to August when ospreys and other wildlife can be easily seen from The Osprey Centre. Ospreys, capercaillies, red squirrels, siskins, crossbills, crested, blue and great tits, great spotted woodpeckers and roe deer are frequently seen in Spring. A variety of guided walks are also organised during May-August.
