Inverness Museums & Art Gallery - Eden Court Theatre

Serving the whole of the Scottish Highlands and Islands, there is a thriving arts scene in Inverness. Both the Museum & Art Gallery and the Eden Court Theatre have undergone facelifts to bring their facilities up to 21st century standards.

The city has a full programme of events and with the additional facilities of the new theatre it will be able to produce its own plays and shows.

Inverness Museum & Art Gallery

Inverness Museum and Art Gallery has recently been refurbished and proudly exhibits a range of displays that tell the true story of the Highlands rather than the often romanticised versions.

The ground floor contains displays on natural history, geology and archaeology. The first floor houses the artefacts that tell the turbulent story of the Highlands of Scotland including weapons and bagpipes, Jacobite memorabilia and Inverness silverware. There is also an exhibition area on the first floor in which changing themed art exhibitions are displayed. Talks and recitals are often organised as well as a range of activities for children including the Discovery Centre on the ground floor that gives families the chance to touch some of the exhibits and find out more about them for the "Hands on Highlands" experience. The museum also has a coffee shop and gift shop.

The Museum and Art Gallery can easily be missed as it's tucked behind the tourist information office at the bottom of Castle Hill. It's open Monday- Saturday 10am to 5pm; the Discovery Centre is free, but ringing to check availability is recommended. Recent improvements mean that the museum is accessible to wheelchair users.

Eden Court Theatre Inverness

The previously seventies style Eden Court Theatre has been undergoing a multi-million pound makeover to bring it into the 21st century and create the largest multi-arts centre in Scotland. It will be using energy efficiency technology and natural materials all of which is being financed by public agencies and donations from private businesses and individuals.

It will contain theatres, two cinemas, bars and restaurant and will be the premier venue for a wide range of drama, comedy and musical productions for the Highlands.

During the latter stages of development it has been closed but is due to reopen shortly. A range of productions are still being staged during this time at temporary venues across the city. Check their website, link right, for updates on progress and events.

The theatre incorporates part of the 19th century Bishop's Palace and is said to be haunted by the 'Green Lady', the ghost of a wife of one of the bishops who hanged herself there. This will also be open to the public once renovations have finished. Eden Court, Reay House, Old Edinburgh Road, Inverness, IV3 3HF. Box office: 01463 234 234.
