Fort Augustus Loch Ness Caledonian Canal Highlands Scotland

Fort Augustus is an attractive village midway on the Great Glen between Fort William and Inverness. It's named after George II's son who later became the notorious "Butcher" at Culloden the Duke of Cumberland.

With its location at the mouth of Loch Ness it's a good stepping off point for boat cruises on either the Caledonian Canal or Loch Ness. It has a good choice of accommodation and watering holes so a good base if you're tackling The Great Glen Way.

Fort Augustus Tourist Guide

Open from April to October, seven days a week, from 10am-6pm is The Clansman Centre where the 19th century schoolhouse in which it's housed has been converted inside to recreate a 17th century turf house. The whole route can be walked in 5-6 days and there is plenty of accommodation along the way in the towns and villages that span the Great Glen. Alternatively you can do sections of it during a day.

Most of the route is low-level and takes in towpaths and woodland walks, but you can always divert off it to take in some more challenging mountain hikes.
