Forfar Town & Glamis Castle

Forfar is the nearest town to popular Glamis Castle and a fine Angus centre for food and farmers markets. Overlooking the picturesque Vale of Strathmore, Forfar makes a superb base for pushing north into the Angus Glens, visiting local Glamis Castle and it's within easy reach of Montrose and the Angus Coast.

A bit like a fine Cornish pasty, the famous Forfar bridie sits within the town's context as a centre for local produce and fine food shops. The Forfar Food Festival takes place annually at the beginning of July.

With its turrets, towers, statues and fine setting near rural Forfar close to the Angus Glens, Glamis Castle is the stuff of fairytales. As well as Glamis' striking looks attracting numerous visitors, its royal links also bring in the crowds. This Scottish castle was the childhood home of the Queen Mother and birthplace of Princess Margaret. Events run throughout the year in the extensive Glamis grounds and gardens. Check the Glamis Castle weblink right for details. You can even get married here!

Kirriemuir & the Angus Glens

Friendly and attractively set Kirriemuir sits on the southern edge of the Grampians and is a popular base for visitors wanting to access the Angus Glens just to the north of the town. Kirriemuir's little centre has an informative Gateway to the Angus Glens visitor centre, plus a host of fine coffee shops and craft/gift shops.

The five Angus Glens (Glenisla, Glen Prosen, Glen Clover, Glen Lethnot and Glen Esk plus the settlements of Memus/Cortachy and Menmuir), part of the sublime Grampian Mountains, offer a host of pretty villages, some of Scotland's best hillwalking, plus other activities such as fishing and game shooting. The River Isla is particularly good for salmon fishing. Checkout the Angus Glens guide website right for full details.

Kirriemuir Gateway to the Glens Museum, The Town House, 32 High Street, Kirriemuir. Tel. 01575 575479. Open Mondays to Saturdays, 1pm-5pm. Closed Sundays. The focus here is on the western Angus Glens including Glen Prosen, Glenisla, Glen Clova and Glen Doll. Kirriemuir has spawned some real talent, and you'll find displays in this centre on both JM Barie, author of Peter Pan and rock singer Bon Scott of AC/DC.

JM Barrie's Birthplace in Kirriemuir is open to the public at 9 Brechin Road, Kirriemuir. Tel. 01575 572646. Open Mondays to Saturdays 11am to 5pm, Sundays 1pm to 5pm. Other attractions in and around the town include the Kirriemuir Aviation Museum and a Camera Obscura on Kirrie Hill. Download the Kirriemuir town guide via the Angus weblink right. A good time to visit Kirriemuir is mid-July, time of the Kirriemuir Show based at the Muirhead of Logie (weblink right). The show's programme includes craft fairs, dog shows, vintage farm vehicle displays, sheep shearing demonstrations and plenty of kids activities.
