Buckie Moray Firth Coast Scotland

Buckie is a traditional fishing town on the Moray Coast. It developed in the herring boom years and is still an important commercial centre where fishing and shipbuilding are at its roots.

It's an excellent base for a variety of outdoor pursuits with several cycle trails and walking routes along the coast and inland through the Speyside countryside.

Buckie Moray Tourist Guide

On the east of Spey Bay is the traditional fishing town of Buckie. The town developed through a series of fishing villages growing along the coast thanks to the herring boom of the 19th century which finally joined up to make Buckie the largest fishing port on the Moray Firth. Fishing is still at the heart of the town with catches being brought into Cluny Harbour, but it is shipbuilding and food processing and packing that is the major industry in Buckie today. The town is a mix of traditional fishing cottages to grand Victorian churches and civic buildings.

Visitor attractions in Buckie include the Buckie and District Fishing Heritage Centre. Situated at Cluny Place, behind the public library, the Cottage is the base for the Fishing Heritage Centre. This is run by local people who want to share their knowledge and history of the fishing and boat building traditions of Buckie. You can also view rare footage of steam drifters at work and you can see regular quayside demonstrations. Open Mon-Fri 10.15am-12.15pm and 2pm-4pm. Sat 10.15am-12.15am. Email: bckfishingheritage@yahoo.co.uk.

The town hosts an annual arts festival, Buckie Festival, that includes concerts, ceilidh, dance, drama, storytelling, poetry reading, childrens' events and showcases local talent. The festival usually takes place in June.

The town has a good range of shops, cafes and restaurants. There is a range of B&B and hotel options. Buckie is no longer connected to the rail network although it was once on the Moray Coast Railway route.

Golf Clubs Buckie

Strathlene Golf Club in Buckie was founded in 1877 and is one of the oldest courses in Scotland. It is a stunning clifftop links course on the east side of Buckie town with excellent views of the Moray Firth where you can often spot the dolphins passing by. More recently a Golf Training Facility has been installed with practice bunkers, pitch and putt, putting greens and a driving range.

The Club welcomes visitors. Call the golf club direct to book. Parties of 10 or more are offered a discount and if you are staying at a local hotel or guest house and book through them or have an authorised discount voucher you can also get a discount on all fees. Strathlene Buckie Golf Club, Portessie, Buckie, Moray AB56 2DJ. Tel/Fax: 01542 831798.

To the west of the town if Buckpool Golf Club. An 18 hole course built in the 1930s on former farmland, but has the character of a links course. Its outlook is over the wide sweeping views of the Moray Firth and Caithness hills in the distance. It was initiated by the council in an effort to alleviate severe unemployment caused by a depression in the herring industry which hit the town hard.

Visitors and societies are welcomed by contacting the club first. Buckpool Golf Course, Barhill Road, Buckie, Grampian. Tel/Fax: 01542 832236. Email: golf@buckpoolgolf.com
