Tarbert Tourist Information

Tarbert is the main town on Harris and is home to the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry port for ferries from Uig on the Isle of Skye.

It's a small town with shops and facilities you may need during your stay on Harris. There's several accommodation choices including hotels, B&B and self-catering. It's a good base for exploring both Harris and Lewis. If you want to explore further afield several boat trips and excursions are available taking you to smaller uninhabited islands and the fantastic World Heritage Site, St Kilda. All are beautiful islands full of mystery and wildlife.

Tarbert Holidays and Breaks

Harris is less populated than Lewis and has no real large towns. Tarbert is the largest town on Harris and can be a welcome stop once you've battled through the mountains to the east.

Tarbert is something of a centre with a Tourist Information office and being the port where the ferries from Skye dock. There is a good range of B&B and hotel accommodation in Tarbert itself. There is a also a tearoom, fish and chip shop, stores for everyday items and big car park and bus stop in which the Tourist Information is located.

Ferries to Tarbert Isle of Harris Outer Hebrides

Caledonian MacBrayne run regular ferry crosssings from Uig on the Isle of Skye to Tarbert on the Isle of Harris.

There are usually two sailings a day during the summer and one a day in the winter. The journey takes just over one hour and forty five minutes arriving in Tarbert harbour on the east side of Harris.

This is the shortest ferry crossing to the Outer Hebrides and the car passenger ferry can take 600 passengers and 110 cars. Onboard facilities include a cafeteria, bar and shop. You can purchase an Island Hopscotch ticket if you're planning doing several island crossings. Ferry crossings between Scotland and the Hebrides include the Lewis, Isle of Skye, the Uists and Barra.

Boat Trips Tarbert to Hebridean Islands and St Kilda

There are several boat trips and excursions available from Tarbert. Kilda Cruises run boat trips to the islands of Rona, Monach Isles both of which are National Nature Reserves and the Shiant Isles. Sea Harris' boat trips from Tarbert take you to the Shiants and the islands of Pabbay, Taransay, Ensay, Killegray, Scarp, Soay, Scotisay. Sine the majority of these islands have become depopulated, a whole host of wildlife has moved in dominating these islands including puffins, kittiwakes, fulmars, guillemots, razorbills, golden eagles, oystercatchers, seals, blue shark, terns and petrels.

Kilda Cruises and Sea Harris also run day trips to St Kilda - a World Heritage Site - fifty miles west of Harris way out in the Atlantic Ocean. St Kilda is now uninhabited although the old village has been preserved and you can wander around the various buildings and get a better idea of the island's history from the museum. There are also archaeological sites on the island and it is a centre for wildlife including the endemic St Kilda wren and St Kilda field mouse as well as seabird colonies of puffins, gannets, guillemots, petrels, fulmars.
