Foula is renowned for being the stronghold of true Shetland culture. Often claimed to be the most isolated inhabited island in the British Isles, it lies fourteen miles from Mainland Shetland. It has a population of around thirty and is just two and half miles wide and three and a half miles long.
It is a mountainous island with some of the highest cliffs in the UK with The Kame rising to 1,220 feet above sea level. Walking and views are what attracts visitors to Foula.
The island has a strong independent culture and determinedly preserves some of the traditions such as using the Julian calendar which was officially dropped in Britain in 1752. They only stopped using Norse Udal law in the late seventeenth century and it has preserved more of the Shetland dialect here than anywhere else in the Shetlands.
Check out the Foula Heritage page, link right, that has a wealth of information on the island, walks and history.
