Moffat Victorian Spa Town

Moffat's heritage revolves around its Victorian boom as a quaint Scottish spa town. Visitors flocked here to take to the Sulphurous Well Waters. The main Moffat Bath Halls were at what is now Moffat's town hall building - it dates from 1827. The mammoth and luxurious 300 room Moffat Hyrdopathic Hotel, the main accommodation for spa resort seekers was unfortunately obliterated in a fire in 1921.

Other architectural gems in the town which serve as reminders to this spa heyday include the Annandale Arms Hotel and Balmoral Hotel on the High Street. The Black Bull Hotel was apparently a favourite of Robert Burns. Note too on the High Street the Moffat Ram and Colvin Fountain. The bronze Moffat Ram is an ode to the history of wool-trading in Moffat, although these days it's the toffee, home-made ice creams and locally made haggis that sell more in the town.

Moffat's own golf club is situated high up on Coats Hill overlooking the town. The fact that it's 670 feet above sea level means that the views up here are as much a pull as the 18th hole course. (see Moffat Golf club weblink right for details and directions).
