Turnberry Golf Courses
Turnberry boasts two splendid luxury golf courses, both part of the luxury golf resort and golf hotel complex Westin Turnberry (see website right for details).
The two on-site Turberry golf courses here include Turnberry Kintyre, with a Par 72. Kintyre is links golf at its best with challenging undulating greets and splendid ocean holes. The views from here are sublime, out to Arran and the Turnberry Lighthouse.
The other Turnberry golf course is Ailsa, one of the world's best golf links course. Ailsa is remembered particularly for the Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson showdown in the 1977 Open Championships. Fine panoramic views of both Alisa Craig and the Turnberry Lighthouse can be seen from this golf course. The ninth hole is particularly renowned (where you'll catch a glimpse of Robert Bruce's castle). You have to take a narrow path to the tee out on a rocky promontory. Not for the faint hearted!

Robert the Bruce Castle Turnberry
Beach walking couldn't be better at Turnberry. Take a tour of Turnberry Bay, taking in both the Turnberry Lighthouse and the ruins of Bruce's Castle. Robert the Bruce is thought to have been born in this castle in 1274.
The Turnberry beach bay walk is around 4.8kms (you'll need around one and a half hours maximum). A small car park is situated on the A719, Pass through Turnberry, passing the famous Turnberry golf hotel and the car park sits at the southern edge of the village.
The castle originally belonged to Robert Bruce's mother, the Countess of Carrick. There's not much left of the castle these days (it was dismantled in 1310 as part of Bruce's strategy to destroy important sites before the English got their hands on them). Parts of the castle's curtain wall is still visible, and the site is well worth the walk for its historic significance as well as an opportunity to view close up the adjacent Turnberry lighthouse. The views out to the Firth of Clyde and Ailsa Craig are also superb.
