Glenluce Abbey, Glenluce Village & Luce Valley Cycling & Walking

The less striking of the three Cistercian abbeys along the Dumfries & Galloway Coast is Glenluce Abbey. It's less intact than Sweetheart and Dundrennan, (stone was pinched for the building of Castle of Park - the laird's local house which was contructed in 1590. The stone plunderer was Thomas, sone of the last abbot of Glenluce Abbey) but well worth a visit particular for its 15th century chapter house.

Glenluce Abbey sits on the north west edge of the Machars just off the A75. Founded in 1192 by Roland, Lord of Galloway Glenluce Abbey is siter to Dundrennan Abbey outside Kirkcudbright and was contstructed by monks from there. Check the Historic Scotland weblink for Glenluce Abbey and opening times. Glenluce Abbey, Newton Stewart, Dumfries & Galloway, DG8 0AF. Tel. 01581 300541.

The Luce Valley area around Glenluce Abbey is noted for its rich archaeological remains. Both prehistoric hut circles and cairns exist in the area - the cairn at Kilhern is the best known. Stop at Glenluce village and take one of the walking or cycling paths to take in some of these historic sites. The village of Glenluce makes a superb base for hooking into the Pilgrims Way - a 50 mile trail for cyclists, walkers or riders. Glenluce Abbey will have details of other ancient sites and trails in the area.
